What Kind of Summer Job Should I Get?

In a few weeks Charlotte schools will let out and if you're looking at a couple months of summer you might be thinking about a summer job. So what kind of summer job should you get? Well, the first step to looking for a summer job is knowing what kind of job you can have. Teenagers under 18 have some restrictions as to what kind of jobs they can get and hours they are allowed to work.



Once you decide what kind of hours/employment you can legally get, next is to decide what to look for.



Working Outside

If you like working outside some options might be to work at Carowinds or another amusement park. Maybe you'd like to do something that keeps you more active and work in landscaping. While it might be hot, you'll be able to stay in shape and usually work early hours so you can have the rest of the day to enjoy summer activities. Another option would to look into lifeguarding, just remember the sunblock!



Working in an Office

Ok, so maybe working outside in the hot sun over the summer is not your idea of fun. Not to worry, there are plenty of office assistant jobs or customer service positions that offer full air conditioned environment. Depending on where you apply, the hours will vary and can provide a flexible schedule so you still have time to enjoy the daytime hours.



Working with People

If you'd rather have some more interaction with people than sitting at a desk or talking on the phone. Retail sales, waiting tables or childcare might be a great way to do that. If you have a knack for working one on one with customers than this is a great fit for you. While you'll be on your feet most the time you're working, you'll be able to improve some of your customer service and communication skills on the job. If people aren't your thing either, maybe there is a doggy daycare or boarding facility in your area that is hiring for people to care for the animals.





Once you decide what kind of job you want to focus on, then you have to start looking. Job searching can be frustrating and hard but if you know where to look it makes things a little easier. It's good to keep in mind what you want and temporary or part time jobs can provide a great way to gain experience for when you're ready to get a more permanent position.
